In my childhood, I heard of an impressive fable, which goes like this:
There was a man fishing by the sea, where it was rich in different kinds of fishes. When he got two fishes, he was about to go home. Then came a foreign visitor.
The visitor asked, “Why not get more fish? There are lots of fish in the sea!”
“What for?” asked the fisherman, without answering the question.
“The more fish you get, the more money you will earn, and then with money you can a big boat, then build a beautiful house, then open a shop, then do some investment…”
“And then?” asked the fisherman.
“Then you can enjoy your life, fishing leisurely at the seaside and enjoying the sunshine…” answered the visitor.
“But I have done this right now.” said the fisherman.
This is a simple story; however, it implicates a deep philosophy of life. It tells about two different kinds of attitudes towards life: one is working first enjoying later; the other is working and enjoying together. As to me, I prefer to the second life style.
As we know, life is unpredictable. We can not know what will happen tomorrow. What we can do is cherishing now. But there are many people busy with work in order to earn numerous of money, to achieve great success. There are many people working fingers to the bone in the purpose of enjoying life when they become old. To this kind of people, they forget one thing: life is constantly changing! When we get old, we might have no teeth, no health, and no youth. What does the money mean to us? When we get old, our family and friends might have gone. What does the time mean to us? Besides, we don’t know how long we will live. Maybe tomorrow we will die because of certain accident or disaster.
What’s more, every stage of life has its own happiness; some happiness can not be postponed. In fact, if some happiness slips through our fingers, we will lose it forever. Not all the things can be made up for in future. For example, when we are child, we like playing hide and seek, climbing trees, and swinging on swings, and so on. These are all our happiness. Are these things still exciting things when we grow up? Our mind and attitude are always changing.
So due to the unknown fortune and unpredictable life, we should value the life now, cherishing every moment of life and happiness of life. We can not control the length of the life, but we can control the quality of the life!
