A news report from the WenChuan earthquake disastrous area have fiercely shocked me. It’s said that a female policeman who had lost ten of her family members, including her 2-years-old child, manage to work for five days with barely a few hours’ rest, fainted at last. Sure, morally speaking she is a fine example for the work of rescue and settling down the survivors. However, when we are impressed by her heroic image, shall we pay some corresponding attention to her suffering and her feeling at the same time?
Psychologically speaking a person who has just lost her or his family members may sink into a mood of sadness. In her case, her suffering maybe greater than she act like. Considering her career as a policeman, the sense of responsibility may help her to temporarily control her mood and take no notice to her suffering by working day and night. But this situation can’t no last long, she still need to face her suffering, meanwhile, get through the sadness reconstruct her life. This is the very important and tough thing for her to which help from society may be helpful. Cares from other people would not directly help her to recover from the mental suffering but help her to short this process maybe. So, what kind of care or help should be offered for her?
First of all, her life need to back to normal in every aspect, for instance, the work time should be reasonable for her, too much work may do harm to her while no work for her may cause her misunderstanding. Secondly, the sense of family care should be available. People around her, her workmates, relatives for instance, can give her the most direct comfort, even a kind greeting from strangers would be helpful. Considering that she has lost her child, maybe we could encourage her to have another or adopt one (our government has provided people in the disaster area who have lost children with such similar policies). Though more social care maybe helpful, we should pay attention not to disturb her life or put her life too much under public concern. Anyway, things happen upon her should not be considered as a raw material for personality profiles or people columns, as no one want her or his suffering to be shown.
No one is supposed to strong for every case, not do the policemen. These people have done too much for us, it our turn for us to do something for them and care them more.
