Maat, also spelled Mayet, in ancient Egyptian religion, the personification of truth, justice, and the cosmic order. The daughter of the sun god Re, she was associated with Thoth, god of wisdom.
Maat's faith is related to everyone's eternal life. In ancien Egypt, Maat is the criterion for determining whether the deceased can obtain immortality. Therefore, in the spiritual judgment ceremony described in the Book of the Dead, one end of the scale records the heart of the dead's good and evil, while the other end is the ostrich feather symbolizing Maat. Only the heart of good greater than evil can be as heavy or lighter than the feather.
