Anubis is the god of death in ancient Egyptian mythology, a god of beasts made by mummies related to life after death. He appeared in Pharaoh's tomb murals as a jackal. For the ancient Egyptians, the afterlife was extremely important, so Anubis was worshipped a long time ago. People prayed to Anubis to protect the dead. He also helped Isis make Osiris into a mummy and handed over the position of Pluto to Osiris.
Most of the titles he obtained are related to his status as the god of burial. For example, the title "He who is upon his mountain" emphasizes his identity as the dead and the patron saint of the tomb, and (He who is in the place of embalming) shows his association with the production of mummy.
Anubis is a Greek expression of the Egyptian name of this god. During the ancient kingdom period (c. 2686 BC – c. 2181 BC), the holy calligraphy standard spelling of its name is composed of a symbol representing the pronunciation of "inpw" and a "jackal" symbol on the "htep" symbol.
The lineage of Anubis varies by myth, time, and source. In early mythology Anubis was the son of Ra, the sun god.In coffin texts from the First Intermediate period (c. 2181-2055 BC), Anubis is the son of the cow goddess Hesart and the cat-headed goddess Baste.Other records describe him as the son of Ra and Nefertis. Later he was the son of Set and Nefertis, which was easy to accept, for Nefertis was supposed to be the wife of Set, who was also a dog-headed god.In the myth of Osiris, Anubis assisted ISIS in mummifying Osiris after he was killed by Set.Because of these associations, Anubis became the patron saint of embalmers. According to drawings in the Book of the Dead, priests often wore jackal masks to support upright mummies during the burial rituals of mummification.
The heart weighing ritual was an important factor in Egyptian mythology, in which Anubis would weigh the heart as lighter or heavier than the ostrich feathers that symbolize Mayat. If the heart is heavier than a feather, the heart will be devoured by Amit, a monster with the head of a crocodile, the upper body of a lion and the hind legs of a hippopotamus.
Later in the Ptolemaic kingdom, the image of Anubis was merged with the Greek god Hermes to form "Hermenubis". Hermenubis also appears in medieval and Renaissance alchemy and Hermetic literature. Anubis is also known for mummification and as the god of death -- unlike other jackals, Anubis' head is the black to match the identity of death.
