Reading Extensively
Reading extensively is very important and necessary. It is useful to learn from reading. Reading serves for delight, for knowledge and for improvement. One without reading extensively has fewer ways to improve himself.
It is a fun to read interesting books in free time for delight, which is much better than immerse oneself into some boring entertainments. Francis Bacon said: “Reading maketh a full man.” Through the process of reading broadly, one’s knowledge tends to be extensive, views objective and actions effective. Reading, which is by heart, makes a man quiet, away from the worldly concerns and interests in mind no matter who he is, privileged or underprivileged. The more one reads, the more easily he distinguishes between right and wrong. That leads him to think, to attach to the noble minds of the world, which, likewise, is to absorb right ways of thinking. It is said in Shi Jing that (just like to make a piece of equipment) one should cut it, engrave it and grind it. That is similar to reading. Some books and texts are to be chewed and digested. They are worth pursuing and are to improve not only one’s ability of language but also his character, thoughts and manners, which will improve one to a true man.
Since reading extensively is of such significance, we are supposed to read more and improve more, with happiness, knowledge and achievement. |
