I choose The House on Mango Street as my reading book for several reasons.
Firstly,I’ve read a little part of this book in an exam paper and its historical background intrigues me. Originating from the cultural collision between Mexican and American traditions after the Mexican-American War in 1848, it represents the Chicano literature, which offers a unique perspective on the cultural integration and conflict.
Secondly, the author Sandra Cisneros, a renowned Mexican-American poet, achieved fame at the age of 30 with this book. I am eager to explore her writing style and the way she portrays the experiences of the characters.
The book's content, composed of 44 pieces of a teenage girl's diary, sounds fascinating. Through the eyes of Esperanza, an adolescent Mexican-American girl, I can gain insights into the life of Latin American women in Chicago's Mango Street. It not only depicts their living space but also reflects their longing for a multicultural environment, which can broaden my understanding of different cultures and the struggles of minority groups.
Finally, its significance in promoting the development of American postmodernist literature and serving as a classic of contemporary American coming-of-age stories is appealing. I believe reading this book will not only be an enjoyable experience but also provide me with valuable perspectives on literature, culture, and personal growth. |
