The book adopts a clear, methodical approach to identifying and explaining the problems associated with redundant and superfluous language in English translations from Chinese. The author employs a structured format, dividing the content into sections that deal with different types of unnecessary words, such as nouns, verbs, and modifiers which is easy for readers to categorize and form a clear map in the mind.
We all know that there are many differences between Chinese and English. But when we practise, we still tend to translate in Chinese mind, which is difficult for us to realize. First, the book tell us the basic principles that write concisely. Whenever you come across one of these suspect phrases in a draft translation, you are called upon to make a judgment. In context, is it justified? Is it necessary for the sense of the passage. Second, the detailed explanations and examples in the book help us to pay close attention to the words we use. Additionally, there are some practices for us to reinforce awareness.
