Reading Task: Chapter 2 Unnecessary Modifiers

Summary of the Content: This chapter continues the description of unnecessary words. This turn is unnecessary modifiers. This chapter introduces some kinds of modifiers like redundant modifiers, self-evident modifiers, intensifiers and so on. In each introductions, there are more than just descriptions about what is modifier and providing comments or advice from experts.

Evaluation: As the same as chapter 1, this chapter’s writing style is focused and direct. It can directly point out mistakes in the sentences and provide the correct forms. It focuses on the modifiers’ wrong uses. This chapter can give us some aspects to reflect our linguistic expressing and correct or not.

Reflection: As the title of this book suggests, when we express our thoughts in English, we would make some mistakes and just transform English to Chinglish or Chinese English. It may have our Chinese characteristics and unique but it would make much difficulty and confusion in understanding. These mistakes are caused by differences between Chinese and English. In Chinese, we tolerate more adjectives and adverbs so that when we translate them literally in English, their effect will be deadening.
         As this chapter suggests, we should improve our judgement. After reading this chapter, I found that I had made many mistakes but didn’t realize at that time. Improving our judgement and understanding the experts’ advice which is concrete and direct as well. Delete all intensive adverbs, like very, really and so on.
