Reading Task: Part two Chapter eleven Parallel Structure
Summary of the Content: In the beginning of this chapter, author introduced parallel structure which is the expression of matching ideas in matching form. And parallel structure can be surprising, economic and forced. Then this chapter talks about difficulties in using parallel structure. We should consider these constructions including elements linked by coordinating conjunctions, elements linked by correlative conjunctions, items in a list or a series of headings and elements linked in comparisons.
Reflection: After reading this chapter, I have a concept of parallel structure. And I know that it is important for us to grasp this skill. Parallel structure can be memorable and outstanding, for example “ To have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do part.” These sentences are quite graceful and full of rhythm. But there are several difficulties in using parallel structure. We should focus on elements linked by coordinating conjunctions, correlative conjunctions and comparisons. |
