My Summary of Chapter 5
1.The most fundamental values in a culture will be coherent with the metaphorical structure of the most fundamental concepts in the culture.
2.The values in our culture and the metaphorical concepts associated with them all have their own contradictions and conflicts. That is to say, although various subcultures in the mainstream culture share basic values, which values are given priority depends on the subculture in which one is located and the individual's values.
My Reflection
After reading Chapter 5, I learned that culture plays an important role in our metaphorical concept. And even culture can be divided into mainstream culture and subcultures, which will influence our value and perception of different values.
And I just think of the example mentioned by Mr. Zhong that Chinese and English have different way to express ‘the latest news.’ When Chinese use “新闻” to express this concept, it indicates that we put ourselves in the position of present. When people speak English use ‘the latest news’, they try to put themselves in the position of future.
In conclusion, learning the relationship between culture and metaphor is crucial for us to better grasp some translation skills and linguistic knowledge.
