Why Do College Students Commit Suicide?

Universities are where future elite are supposed to be born. However, in recent years, an alarming shadow has been looming over these beautiful campuses; every year, there are students committing suicide in these “ivory towers”. As a college student myself, apart from being shocked and grieved, I cannot help asking; why such tragedies? Are there any possible means to cross out this nightmarish episode in the chapter of our university life, the episode so heartbreaking to the victims’ classmates, teachers, let alone their parents?

Bearing these disturbing questions in mind, I asked some of my friends who also concerned with this problem. I found that many suicide cases result from conflicts between the college students themselves. The most important cause of suicide committed by college students is psychological disorder.

Some students bear too much academic pressure. They used to be outstanding students and shone in every subject when they were high school students. But the competition in universities is much fiercer since every one was formerly a top student. As a result, there must be some students gradually tarnished or even lagging behind others. Their frustration can easily be fuelled by the contrast with the currently successful students. The state of their mental disorder is getting more complicated because Chinese students always believe that as long as you work hard, you can get a good mark. However, the reality is not that simple.

Tragedies among this type of students are really pitiful, for they might well have been promising. Meanwhile, I cannot help questioning their straight-A excellence, for they do not have the courage to admit failure and they lack the resilience to recover from it. There seems to be no ready-made elixir to curb such suicidal cases. However, a preventive measure is possible. These students need to re-examine their self-evaluation criterion. Are those marks the only goal of four years’campus life? Is other people’s recognition so important? Does the outward glamour and glory surely amount to success and true happiness?

Another factor leading to college students’ mental disorder has something to do with their emotional life. Those students who trend to be more sensitive and vulnerable are likely to push themselves to the emotional brink if they lose their boyfriend or girlfriend. And from many people, I heard one remark, “When my girl/boy left me, I felt that the whole world deserted me.” So, it seems that at this stage of emotional vacuum, care and love from parents, friends, or teachers can be of critical importance.

Whenever I see the promising elite withering around me at their most blooming age, sympathy and sorrow always grip me. As a college student, I understand that it is hard to enter the university and it is even harder to meet with all different people and pressures during the four years of university life. But we shoud learn how to face the conflict in the life!
