Lighting up a special time
By Xing Yi | China Daily | Updated: 2021-02-26 07:41
Lantern Festival events bring friends and families together across the country in a unique celebration of culture and tradition marked by fascinating and imaginative illuminations, Xing Yi reports from Shanghai.

The Lantern Festival is one of the most important traditional festivals in China. Celebrated on the 15th day of the first lunar month and marking the end of the Chinese lunar new year holiday, it falls on Friday this year.

The Chinese name of the festival, Yuanxiao means the night of the first full moon in the Chinese calendar, and as the character yuan is homophonic to the word reunion, the festival also celebrates the reunion of family.

On the night of the festival, people will observe the moon, have a sumptuous meal, and enjoy time together with family and friends in parks or visit lantern displays with them.

The annual lantern show at Yuyuan Garden, a historical tourist site in Shanghai, started on Jan 28 and will run through February.

The annual celebrations have been held for 26 years and are the city's top attraction for tourists during Spring Festival. The month-long celebration attracts around 1 million visitors every year.

Each year, the show will feature different themes based on major upcoming events and the latest trends. This year, large lighting installations featuring the ox, the Chinese zodiac animal for the lunar year, have been set up in the main plaza.

Lighting installations depicting Tian'anmen Square in Beijing, the red boat in Jiaxing, Zhejiang province, and the Memorial of the First Congress of the Communist Party of China have also been set up on the facade of the Hua Bao Mansion to celebrate the centenary of the Party which takes place on July 1.

Lanterns with the traditional elements of the Yangtze River Delta, such as the Three Pools Mirroring the Moon in Hangzhou's West Lake, stone bridges and carp balloons, have been installed along the lake under the famous Nine Zigzag Bridge to recreate the scene from the mobile game One Hundred Scenes of Jiangnan, which is popular in China.

A themed performance on a boat is held every half hour from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm.

Molly dolls, the toy series featuring a blue-eyed girl with curly short hair, created by Hong Kong designer Kenny Wong, have also been made into lanterns and displayed in the shopping mall. The dolls, promoted by toymaker Pop Mart, have become a craze among China's youngsters in recent years, contributing to the company's successful initial public offering in December.

The Yuyuan Garden in Shanghai has successfully attracted young people to participate in the celebration of the Chinese traditional festival. Last year, it partnered with Disney to put up Mickey and Minnie Mouse lanterns to celebrate 2020's animal of the Chinese zodiac.

The traditional food for the festival is yuanxiao or tangyuan, which are similar ball-shaped dessert dumplings, made with glutinous rice flour and stuffed with a variety of fillings.

The difference lies in how they are prepared. In North China, people eat yuanxiao, which is rolled in a basket with solid fillings to become a big and round rice flour ball. In South China, people eat tangyuan, which is made of a glutinous rice wrapper that covers the filling before being kneaded into a round ball.

People visiting the lantern show in Yuyuan Garden have many food choices. Ningbo Tangtuan, a time-honored restaurant dedicated to making tangyuan, is located inside the Yuyuan Garden shopping mall, along with many other time-honored restaurants, such as Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant, Lu Bo Lang Shanghai cuisine restaurant and Song He Lou noodle shop.

Besides Yuyuan Garden, other famous lantern shows in China include the displays at Nanjing's Confucius Temple, Jiangsu province, Xi'an City Wall, Shaanxi province and Zigong, Sichuan province.

China's Hubei invites people to enjoy cherry blossoms
Central China's Hubei province, the former epicenter of the COVID-19 epidemic, is inviting people across the country, especially medical workers who fought on the anti-epidemic frontline, to enjoy its cherry blossoms, according to a press conference held by the provincial government on March 3.
The province will launch a cherry blossom-themed event from March 8, releasing a list of more than 40 scenic areas where the gorgeous cherry blooms can be enjoyed, including famous spots such as Wuhan University and Wuhan East Lake Cherry Blossom Park in the provincial capital Wuhan, as well as in other cities.
Last year, over 42,000 healthcare workers in more than 340 medical teams from across the country bravely joined in the fight against the virus, putting themselves in harm's way in Hubei, and had no time to enjoy the cherry blossoms in Wuhan, Xu Yong, deputy director of the province's department of culture and tourism, said at the press conference.
To make up for that missed opportunity, Hubei will invite representatives of medical workers who assisted the province during the epidemic to enjoy its spring blossoms, Xu added.
Wuhan University will launch special events for medical workers and will not receive bookings from other visitors on March 13 and 14, Wu Ping, deputy president of the university, said at the press conference.
In addition to arranging a welcoming ceremony for medical workers, the university will recommend the best routes and offer pick-up and guide services as well as performances for them, Wu explained.
Medical workers who assisted Hubei in the anti-virus fight can also enjoy special discounts while shopping at large shopping malls, supermarkets, major business districts, and e-commerce platforms in the province, Hu Zhonghai, deputy director of the province's department of commerce, said at the press conference.
However, COVID-19 prevention measures should be implemented at tourist spots, restaurants and hotels in Hubei, and reservation policies at scenic spots should be observed regularly, with visitor caps and staggered access put in place.

International spectators will be refused
entry into Japan for Tokyo 2020
International spectators will be refused entry into Japan for this summer's Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee said in a statement on Saturday.
Any tickets bought by overseas residents for the postponed Games, scheduled to begin on July 23, will be refunded.
The decision was taken following a virtual meeting between the "Five Parties" -- the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG), the Organizing Committee Tokyo 2020 and the Government of Japan -- with the IOC and IPC saying they "fully respect and accept this conclusion."
Currently, the COVID-19 situation in Japan and many other countries around the world is still very challenging and a number of variant strains have emerged, whilst international travel remains severely restricted globally, the statement read.
Based on the present situation of the pandemic, it is highly unlikely that entry into Japan will be guaranteed this summer for people from overseas.
In order to give clarity to ticket holders living overseas and to enable them to adjust their travel plans at this stage, the parties on the Japanese side have come to the conclusion that they will not be able to enter into Japan at the time of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Organizers say the decision will "further contribute to ensure safe and secure Games for all participants and the Japanese public" and it will not affect accredited Games participants, who will be required to continue following the "Tokyo 2020 Playbooks."
Organizers were forced to postpone the Olympics for the first time in the event's history in March 2020 due to the coronvairus pandemic.
The Games are scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 8 and the Paralympics from August 24 to September 5.
Even though the number of coronavirus cases have been low in Japan compared to the US or the United Kingdom, in recent months its health system has been overwhelmed by the worst wave of infections since the pandemic began.
The country only started inoculating its population of 126 million people with Pfizer-BioNTech shots at the end of February, more than two months after the vaccine rolled out in other major countries.
Since the start of the pandemic, Japan has recorded more than 455,000 cases and 8,794 deaths.
On top of the Covid-19 complications, both the Tokyo Olympics chief, Yoshiro Mori, and the Tokyo Olympics creative head, Hiroshi Sasaki, were forced to resign after making derogatory remarks about women.

Pandora's box-office gold as Avatar tops charts
Eleven years on and James Cameron's groundbreaking sci-fi epic is still pulling fans into theaters and breaking records.
It took merely one and a half days from the start of its re-screening across China on March 12 for James Cameron's sci-fi blockbuster Avatar to retake its crown as the world's top-grossing film of all time.
Data from the box-office tracker shows that, with the newly earned revenue from the re-release sales as of Tuesday, Avatar has seen its total gross surpass 1.5 billion yuan ($231.3 million) in mainland theaters, helping it to reclaim the throne as cinematic top dog from Marvel's 2019 superhero hit Avengers: Endgame.
Widely regarded as a technological game changer, Avatar first opened across China in January 2010 following its release in the United States in December 2009 creating a frenzy that ushered in the revolutionary mass expansion of 3D-capable screen installation in China.
It triggered a construction spree of advanced auditoria in which the moviegoing public could enjoy a cutting-edge cinematic experience.
In early 2010, the country had less than 1,000 3D-capable screens, only 14 of which were IMAX-compatible.
Now, however, those figures have grown to around 60,000 3D cinema screens, among which nearly 1,000 are IMAX screens, with over 700 of them in operation and the rest at various stages of installation.
Cameron, who is currently in New Zealand engaged in post-production work for the Avatar sequels, tells China Daily, via an online video interview, that he feels "truly incredible about what has happened in China".
Speaking about the legacy that Avatar has given to global audiences over the past decade, Cameron says he believes Avatar is still a "fresh "tale with a thought-provoking theme that explores climate change and mankind's relationship with nature.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Globalization
Advantages
Proponents of globalization believe it allows developing countries to catch up to industrialized nations through increased manufacturing, diversification, economic expansion, and improvements in standards of living. Outsourcing by companies brings jobs and technology to developing countries, which help them to grow their economies. Trade initiatives increase cross-border trading by removing supply-side and trade-related constraints. Globalization has advanced social justice on an international scale as well, and advocates report that it has focused attention on human rights worldwide that might have otherwise been ignored on a large scale.
Disadvantages
One clear result of globalization is that an economic downturn in one country can create a domino effect through its trade partners. For example, the 2008 financial crisis had a severe impact on Portugal, Ireland, Greece, and Spain. All these countries were members of the European Union, which had to step in to bail out debt-laden nations, which were thereafter known by the acronym PIGS. Globalization detractors argue that it has created a concentration of wealth and power in the hands of a small corporate elite that can gobble up smaller competitors around the globe. Globalization has become a polarizing issue in the U.S. with the disappearance of entire industries to new locations abroad. It's seen as a major factor in the economic squeeze on the middle class.
For better and worse, globalization has also increased homogenization. Starbucks, Nike, and Gap dominate commercial space in many nations. The sheer size and reach of the U.S. have made the cultural exchange among nations largely a one-sided affair.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the simple meaning of globalization?
In essence, globalization is about the world becoming increasingly interconnected. Countries today are more connected than ever before, due to factors such as air travel, containerized sea shipping, international trade agreements and legal treaties, and the Internet. In the world of business, globalization is associated with trends such as outsourcing, free trade, and international supply chains.
Is globalization good or bad?
Proponents of globalization will point to the dramatic decline in poverty that has taken place throughout the world over the past several decades, which many economists attribute in part to increased trade and investment between nations. Similarly, they will argue that globalization has allowed products and services such as cellphones, airplanes, and information technology to be spread far more widely throughout the world. On the other hand, critics of globalization will point to the negative impact it has had on specific nations’ industries, which might face increased competition from international firms. Globalization can also have negative environmental impacts due to economic development, industrialization, and international travel.
Why is globalization important?
Globalization is important because it is one of the most powerful forces affecting the modern world, so much so that it can be difficult to make sense of the world without understanding globalization. For example, many of the largest and most successful corporations in the world are in effect truly multinational organizations, with offices and supply chains stretched right across the world. These companies would not be able to exist if not for the complex network of trade routes, international legal agreements, and telecommunications infrastructure that were made possible through globalization. Important political developments, such as the ongoing trade conflict between the United States and China, are also directly related to globalization.

1.proponent n. 支持者
2.supply-side 供给侧
3.Portugal n. 葡萄牙
4.detractor n. 反对者
5.homogenization n. 均化;均化作用
6.containerized adj. 集装箱装运的
