Amarna is the modern Arabic name for the site of the ancient Egyptian city of Akhetaten, capital of the country under the reign of Akhenaten(1353-1336 BCE). The site is officially known as Tell el-Amarna, Egypt's 18th Dynasty Pharaoh built its capital here and moved it from Thebes, so its name means "the land where Atun God Deze was taken". It is located in Upper Egypt, near Hermopolis and across the banks of the Nile.

Akhetaten was laid out over six miles on the east bank of the Nile between the shore and the cliffs above Assiut. The four main districts were the North City, Central City, Southern Suburbs, and Outskirts; none of these names were used to designate the locales in antiquity. The North City was constructed around the Northern Palace where guests were received and Aten was worshiped. The Central City was designed around the Great Temple of Aten and the Small Temple of Aten. This was the bureaucratic center of the city where the administrators worked and lived. The Southern Suburbs was the residential district for the wealthy elite and featured large estates and monuments. The Outskirts were inhabited by the peasant farmers who worked the fields and on the tombs of the necropol

Karnak
Karnak, also called Al-Karnak, village located in Al-Uqṣur muḥāfaẓah (governorate), Upper Egypt, which has given its name to the northern half of the ruins of Thebes on the east bank of the Nile River, including the ruins of the Great Temple of Amon. Karnak and other areas of ancient Thebes—including Luxor, the Valley of the Kings, and the Valley of the Queens—were collectively designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979.

Karnak contains the northern group of the Theban city temples, called in ancient times Ipet-Isut, “Chosen of Places.”

The most striking feature of the temple at Karnak is the hypostyle hall, which occupies the space between the third and second pylons.
