When I  see The Ajanta Caves,there are ripples in my heart.How miraculous the caves!Through further exploration,British army officer John Smith may not have slain a tiger on his hunting expedition but he returned with a find that was much more precious. The year was 1819 and the young captain in the Madras Regiment was scouring the wilds in what is now interior Maharashtra when he heard a voice calling out to him.

阿旃陀石窟是佛教石窟纪念碑，现存约30窟。始凿于公元前 2 世纪，延续到7世纪中叶。位于印度马哈拉施特拉邦的奥兰加巴德地区。这些洞穴包括绘画和岩石雕刻，被认为是印度古代壁画的重要代表。特别是通过手势，姿势和形式呈现情感的表现力绘画。1983年根据文化遗产选择标准（I）（II）（III）（IV）《世界遗产名录》。世俗题材多样，与中国，波斯风格相融合，展现了社会生活的方方面面，如帝王宫廷欢宴、狩猎、朝圣、飞禽走兽、奇花异卉等。画面中出现了大量的现实生活场景，说明为宗教服务的绘画艺术已经出现了一种世俗倾向。反映了印度古典四项的美学思想。阿旃陀石窟的雕刻和壁画对以后印度美术创作产生了巨大作用，而且随着佛教的传播，对其他国家的美术亦有很大的影响。公元7世纪，我国唐代名僧玄奘在印度曾拜访过这里，有精妙确切的记载，他写道，“爱有伽蓝，基于幽谷，高堂邃宇，疏崖枕峰;重阁层台，背岩面壑”。
