There are mainly several reasons for choosing The House on Mango Street as an extracurricular reading book. Firstly, it is short and concise in length, composed of numerous short stories, which perfectly suits my daily fragmented reading habit. In my busy study life, I can always find a moment of leisure to read a small section without interrupting the continuity of reading due to time constraints.
Secondly, from the perspective of language learning, the language in the book is simple, easy to understand, beautiful, and vivid. The words are used accurately and are full of poetry, which is of great help in improving my vocabulary and language sense. The rich use of rhetorical devices such as metaphors and personifications in the book enables me to learn a lot of vivid English expressions, helping to enhance my English writing skills.
Finally, its unique cultural perspective deeply attracts me. This work depicts the life of the American lower-class community from the perspective of a Latina girl, allowing me to have an in-depth understanding of the living conditions and inner worlds of ethnic minorities in a multicultural context. It broadens my cultural horizons and cultivates my cross-cultural communication awareness. |
