After reading the first chapter of The Spirit of the Chinese People, I'm impressed by Ku Hung-ming's unique views. He argues that the real Chinaman has an inexpressible gentleness, born from sympathy and intelligence. This is shown in their life of the heart, which affects aspects like language learning and politeness.

The chapter also delves into Confucianism. It explains how it takes the place of religion in China, giving people a sense of security and permanence. Confucius' teachings, centered around the "Law of the Gentleman" and loyalty, have shaped Chinese society.

Moreover, Ku Hung-ming criticizes Western misunderstandings of China. He points out that scholars like Arthur Smith fail to truly understand the Chinese people. This makes me see that cultural understanding needs more than just surface - level observations.

Overall, this chapter deepens my appreciation for the Chinese spirit. It reveals the richness of Chinese culture and its values, making me eager to explore more through the rest of the book.
