Reader: 文心怡
Reading Time: 10week
Reading Task: Chapter5-6
Summary of the Content:
Chapter 5 points out that the basic values of a culture are closely linked to its metaphorical structure. For example, the "up-down" spatial metaphors are consistent with values such as "more is better". Different cultures and subcultures have different priorities for metaphors. Chapter 6 explains that ontological metaphors are based on the experience of physical objects and substances, including entity and substance metaphors, and container metaphors. These metaphors help people understand and deal with experiences. For instance, "inflation" is regarded as an entity, and various concepts are conceptualized as containers.
Evaluation:
The theory is profound and innovative. It reveals the relationship between metaphors, culture, and cognition through numerous examples, providing a new perspective for research. The logical structure is clear, with viewpoints proposed first and then demonstrated, and the classification and elaboration are easy to understand.
Reflection:
Metaphors play a crucial role in cross - cultural communication. Misunderstandings may occur without understanding them, such as the different metaphors of "dragon" in Chinese and Western cultures. In daily life, we should pay attention to the metaphors we use, as they reflect our thinking and values. We can also try new metaphors to expand our thinking. For example, we can re-understand love by regarding it as "love is a garden". |
