Patriotism
Patriotism is an eternal member of the vocabulary family. It appeared the moment the first country came into shape and will not flash out until his brother Nation perishes. It is as ancient as Xia Dynasty and as modern as Kosovo. But when asked what exactly patriotism is, most of us would end up with stumbling words. Numerous descriptions of patriotism are emerging as the wheel of time rolls on, but no one can offer a clear definition of it.
We do a poor job at defining patriotism though, they excel in getting it cross by actions. People in every corner of the globe go all out to do what is patriotic, to answer the call of patriotism. To answer the call of patriotism , China’s 56 ethnic groups joined hands, tough as it was, and rid the land of the shadows of the Japanese invaders. To answer the call of patriotism, Napoleon wiped almost all the border-lines on the map of Europe and bestowed it with a brand new name –France Empire. To answer the call of patriotism, students beat their fellow students to death simply because they came from Japan.
Patriotism is really a tremendous power if it is properly used. It could serve as the glue that glues together different nations as well as different parts of land. It helped maintain the territorial integrity as well as the renown of a country.
But no coin has only one side. Patriotism would also be too powerful a charm to resist. I t controls people’s wit and reason. Facing the wall of patriotism , everyone is blind from the distinction of right and wrong. With the weight of patriotism, the balance in our heart would uncontrollablely bend towards our own country. In the sake of patriotism, we could willingly give out all we own , even our lives.
A double-edged sword patriotism is. Appropriately applied, it would be of great use. Misused, it would bring about countless follies and tragedies. It kindles the flame of hatred and sow the sees of war, or even dash the world with blood. Therefore, patriotism should be the engine of the boat of country rather than the helm. |
