The College Entrance Examination

The June 6th and 7th are either black – letter days or red – letter days for most of the Chinese senior – high school graduates. I have undergone such experience and in the end got relieved. 3 years later, of the same date, my cousin called me, ‘today is my judgment day, I could hardly fall asleep last night.’ He was going to take the exam and quite nervous at that moment. I comforted him and encouraged him to be brave and take it easy, though I knew that the stone on his heart could never be lifted until the result of the exam had turned out.
I am not in the position to judge whether the exam is scientific or reasonable enough as to be kept in existence. It is a universal truth that once an exam, always defective. Since 1977, China has restored the entrance examination, which offers many students access to further study in college and shuts others off from enrollment. This has stirred a mania among the students and their parents. The former exert themselves to get high scores, while the latter employ all kinds of methods to drive their children to be more diligent. However, pains do not always reap gains, the mother of success will even haunt someone each time he tries the exam. Consequently, detestation for the exam begins to germinate, and soon to proliferate. People start to claim that the exam cannot evaluate a student’s knowledge or assess his ability. Notwithstanding, violently have they protested, there is no achievement has ever been made, for nobody has proposed any better solution. China is a country of 1.3 billion people and there are millions of senior – high school graduates every year. So almost has to compromise with the system.
As the majority of the students focus most of their attention upon preparing for the exam, buried in books and exam papers, they are always not competent enough in reality. Educationists and teachers are trying to find a way out. Nevertheless, by modifying the education system, little improvement has been made. They proposed the so called “competence – based education”, and put it into enforcement; however, it has never lightened students’ schoolbags and thinned their books. Things are getting worse on. That’s the status quo of China’ education.
