Against the backdrop of modern China being buffeted by Western powers and traditional culture facing severe challenges, Gu Hongming's "The Spirit of the Chinese People" emerged, attempting to awaken the Chinese people's recognition of the value of their own culture and also opening a window for the West to understand China. After reading the first chapter "The Faith of the Good People" and the second chapter "The Spirit of the Chinese People" of this book, I was deeply touched and gained a new understanding of the spiritual characteristics of the Chinese people and the value of traditional culture.

In the first chapter "The Faith of the Good People", Gu Hongming explored the role of religion in Western society and the similar role played by Confucianism in Chinese society. The emergence of Western religions stems from people's fear of the unknown world and their pursuit of a sense of security. People expect to obtain spiritual comfort and moral guidance through religion. In China, Confucianism has assumed a similar function. It has provided the Chinese people with a complete set of moral norms and codes of conduct, shaping the values and spiritual world of the Chinese people. Although the "Three Cardinal Bonds and Five Constant Virtues" have been widely criticized in modern times, from another perspective, they have maintained the stable order of Chinese society for thousands of years, enabling people to have clear responsibilities and obligations in the family and society. For example, the concept of "filial piety" makes the Chinese people attach great importance to family ethics. The respect and support for parents have become a deeply ingrained moral concept. This concept not only promotes family harmony but also plays a positive role in the stability of the entire society.

In the second chapter "The Spirit of the Chinese People", Gu Hongming pointed out that the core of the Chinese spirit is gentleness. This gentleness is not weakness or cowardice but a quality derived from compassion and wisdom, and it is an embodiment of the absence of harshness, strictness, rudeness, and violence. He compared the Chinese people with other ethnic groups. Americans are broad-minded and simple, but not profound enough; the British are profound and simple, but not broad-minded enough; the Germans are broad-minded and profound, but not simple enough; the French are sensitive, but lack some excellent qualities of other ethnic groups. Only the Chinese people comprehensively possess the four virtues of profundity, broad-mindedness, simplicity, and spirituality. The Chinese people live a spiritual life and attach great importance to the cultivation of emotions and morality, which gives the Chinese people a unique spiritual charm. Just like a child who has experienced many vicissitudes but still maintains innocence, possessing the wisdom of an adult and the innocence of a child, it is a perfect combination of the soul and wisdom. We can deeply feel the manifestation of this spirit in traditional Chinese art and literature. The pursuit of the beauty of artistic conception in Chinese paintings does not lie in the precise depiction of things but in conveying an inner emotion and spirit, demonstrating the Chinese people's delicate perception of life and their respect for nature and humanity. The implicit expression of emotions in classical Chinese poetry contains profound feelings in concise words, reflecting the richness and delicacy of the Chinese people's spiritual world.

Looking back at history, at the moment when the country was invaded by foreign powers and the nation was in peril, the Chinese people demonstrated an indomitable spirit. Countless people with lofty ideals, one after another, sacrificed their lives for national independence and national dignity. This is precisely the manifestation of the profundity and broad-mindedness in the Chinese spirit. The deep love for the country and the nation motivated them to persevere in the face of difficulties. In modern society, this spirit of the Chinese people still shines brightly. In the face of natural disasters, the people of the whole country unite as one and help each other. In the field of scientific and technological innovation, scientific researchers make silent contributions and have the courage to explore, demonstrating the wisdom and tenacity of the Chinese people.

The content of these two chapters has made me deeply aware of the uniqueness of the Chinese spirit and the profound heritage of traditional culture. In today's era of globalization, we should cherish and inherit this spiritual wealth even more, draw strength from it, and actively communicate with the world at the same time, so that the Chinese spirit can shine more brightly on the world stage.
