REVIEW OF MARGOT AT THEWEDDING
It begins with the story that Margot, a famous writer, with her teenage son Claude went to visit her to-be-married sister, Pauline, with whom she hasn’t spoken for many years. Despite of that , Margot went there to show her support to her sister. Both of them were so happy to see each other as if they all have forgotten the unhappiness before between them. However, they didn’t know what was waiting ahead. As Margot was a very captious person, she seemed to be unable to open her mouth without speaking critically and presumptuously. She couldn’t hide her contempt of her future brother-in-low, Malcolm, who had no fixed job and spending all his days sketching pornographic drawings and writing angry letters to reviews editors of music magazines. Her remarks about Malcolm almost lead to the collapse of relationship between Pauline and Malcolm, which is an irony compared to her original intention. She even turned trivial conflicts between Pauline and her neighbor into a full-scale war . She was to quickly intervened when she saw the neighbors was mistreating their child-which was also a clue that she herself was under the nightmarish memory of being maltreated by her father in childhood. After all these conflicts, quarrels , she seemed to realized the nature of all kinds of relationships and come to realize what is the most important in this world

This movie MARGOT AT THE WEDDING is interesting, humorous, incisive and doesn’t lack of truthfulness. The excellent performance of the two leading actresses molded totally different characters of two sisters and show the audience how their characters lead to their different lifes. The theme of the movie is to probe into complex relationship between sisters, parent and child, as well as between husband and wife.

The most important relationship in the movie was between the sisters.They all suffer from their father’s abuse from childhood. That might be the reason why there are eccentricity in their personality. They always blurt out things that hurt each other so much. We can not find out the exact reason why they had a bad term with each other for years, but it is certain that their characters play a large part. As Pauline said to her sister: you are always an aggressor. For Margot always make poisonous comment about others.  However, like common sisters. They also have interesting experience of quarelling and fighting with each other. As Pauline told Margot’s son :“when we were children, once your mother spray oil on my body and tried to put me in the oven ”Despite of that, we can see they still love each other. For Margot insisted on going to Pauline’s wedding to show her support without knowing whether her sister will accept her. For Pauline it was also a surprise to see Margot. When Margot can’t contain herself and tried to tear the relationship between Pauline and Malcolm, saying: he’s like the guy we rejected when we were sixteen”, their conflicts have been upgraded. Pauline even shouted at Margot:“ you are an asshole!”However, we can still find a track that they love each other. When Malcolm told Pauline how he hated her sister and thought she was an idiot, Pauline said resolutely: no, she’s not an idiot ,you just don’t like her.

Another relationship was between husband and wife. In spite of Margot’s affair with another writer Dick, Jim, Margot’s husband was always trying hard to win her back. He drove from faraway to see Margot and brought her a pair of shoes as present. Though Margot showed explicitly her dissatisfaction , saying: I have already got a pair of slippers. I hate people giving something I already have, he seemed to be so tolerant and just said : it is ok to have a pair of shoes. When they were having a talk at a cold night, Jim took it off and put it on Margot ,Margot was deeply moved, she said she even didn’t know she was cold before Jim gave the coat to her .Maybe at that moment she has realized that it was her husband that loved her most.

The director also tried to dig into the relationship between parent and child.. Margot is picky even with no exception to her own son. A pair of glasses can show clearly that she was such a person. Before they sent for her sister’s home, she insisted that her son should put on the glasses since he demanded them from her, even he is obviously reluctant to do so. While when his son was leaving to meet his father, he put on the glasses, just to make her mother happy, I think. she said indifferently: that would make your face look very broad . She also showed explicitly how disappointed she was about her son : “ you used to act gracefully, but that’s not the fact now.” “When you were young, I wouldn’t let anyone else hold you, I think that’s wrong.” Her son sometimes hated her so much that he shouted: I hate you so much because you can’t shut your fat mouth!” Their words were hurting, but they can’t deny the fact that they are each other’s most beloved one.

This movie shows us how subtle these relationships are . Sometimes there are no way out for solving all these problems and clearing the divergence. What we need to do is just accept their existence and enjoy our life. As the end the movie showed, Margot threw all her luggage and left with her son. It symbolized that she had had the load off her mind and understand what was the most important in this world .Her son, her sister, her husband, are still the persons she first think of when she was in difficult time, no matter what had happened between them.
