Reading Task: Why I Choose to Read The House on Mango Street
Firstly, it evokes my resonance with a coming-of-age story. The House on Mango Street tells the story of a young girl, Esperanza, and her journey of self-discovery. Her exploration of identity, longing for the future, and keen observations of the world around her remind me of my own experiences. I have also felt lost, yearned for freedom, or been curious about the world at some point. This sense of resonance is one of the main reasons that drew me to the book.
Secondly, it explores feminine perspectives and self-discovery. I am interested in female growth, self-discovery, and feminist literature, this book will offer profound insights. It not only tells the story of a girl's growth but also shows the resilience and courage of women in the face of adversity.
Thirdly, I am interested in cultural diversity. This book portrays the life of a Latinx community in the United States, showing the struggles and hopes of immigrant families, as well as the challenges and beauty of cultural integration. I think it will open a window for me to understand life in a multicultural context.
The last reason is its literary value and influence. The House on Mango Street is a highly acclaimed modern classic, having received numerous honors, including the Pulitzer Prize. It holds an important place in literature and is widely used in educational settings. |
