The first part of Chinglish focuses on "redundant expression" and reveals the interference of Chinese thinking on English writing through theoretical analysis and a large number of examples. the authors point out that the core problem with Chinglish is the addition of "superfluous words" with no real meaning, such as "the pace of economic reform" in "accelerate the pace of economic reform", Or "the cause of peaceful reunification" in promoting the cause of peaceful reunification. These redundancies include both noun category words (e.g., "work of", "field of"), weak verb structures (e.g., "make an improvement" instead of "improve"), and five redundant modifiers: Repetitive modifications (e.g., "mutual cooperation"), self-explanatory modifications (e.g., "agricultural harvests"), intensifier overuse (e.g., "absolutely essential"), qualifier redundancy (e.g., "big in." size ") and a literal translation of Chinese jargon (e.g., "deepen reform"). This phenomenon is also common in everyday life, such as the translation of "fried chicken" as "fried chicken in oil" in menus, and the use of "various kinds of travel services" instead of the simple "travel services" in travel advertisements. Even in everyday conversation, "Let me repeat again" is synonymous. The author compares "The prolongation of the existence of this temple is due to the solidity of its construction" with "This temple has. endured because it was solidly built ", which vividly shows the conflict between Chinese "paratactic thinking" and English "hypotaxis logic" -- Chinese habit strengthens semantics through repetition (such as "strengthening infrastructure construction"). And Idiomatic English should eliminate redundancy and go straight to the core (" improve infrastructure "). The book recommends creating a "blacklist of redundant words," using strong verbs instead of noun structures, and developing linguistic sensitivity by comparing Chinese and English media headlines such as "China achieves new progress in reform" and "China reforms gain momentum."
