Recently, a storm of boycotting Beijing Olympics has risen, then, it has been followed a series of chain reactions, including vicious slanders on the Chinese people, some behaviors of certain Western leaders toward affairs of breaking the unity of China, as well as the reactions of China. Now and here, I would like to take this opportunity to express some of my opinion.
Firstly and certainly, all of these boycotts of Beijing Olympics are meaningless, except resulting in the Sino-Western relations backward, thereby the impediment to the development and prosperity of both sides. So what are the causes of boycotting Beijing Olympics. Maybe the main reason is the scare of the West about the prosperity of modern China, which might be a threat to the West in their eyes.
However, in my thought, the essential cause is the difference of these two cultures, which results in the misunderstanding about China.
The Chinese nation always loves freedom and peace. The Chinese people have always longed for peace prevailing across the countries. “Benevolence and good-neighborliness” were all along regarded as a treasures maxim by our ancestors. Therefore, China will never impose its will on others, nor undermine or deny other countries.
Be it historical tradition, faith and culture, or social system, values and level of development, countries or regions are often different from one another. It is these differences that make our planet dazzling, colorful and bustling with life. Such diversity is a legacy of history and will stay with us into the future. The ancient Chinese thinker Confucius once said,” All living creatures grow together without harming one another; ways run parallel without interfering with one another.” Instead of harboring bias against or deliberately belittling other civilization, we should give full respect to the diversity of civilizations. And this is also the attitude of China. Therefore, the aim of China is to promote common development of the world’s economies on the basis of equality and mutual benefit.
Back to the topic, the boycott of Beijing Olympics is undoubtedly wrong. Actually, the Beijing Olympics is an opportunity to deepen the understanding of the two different cultures, as well as a means in the course of mutual tolerance and seeking agreement.
In conclusion, let us be against the boycott of Beijing Olympics and have a great expectation of 2008. |
